OVERVIEW.

Globally, e-health patient engagement platforms are growing by 17.3% each year (CAGR 2017-2020). To date, these platforms focus on specific components such as patient education, clinical diagnosis, telehealth visits (contact a doctor), remote monitoring and general information for diseases and conditions. Platforms are beginning to use AI to developing insights from user data, predict and recognize issues and prevent poor outcomes. The issue is, however, they are creating parallel and fragmented experiences. These platforms are designed around workflows for hospitals, health systems and providers.

PROBLEM STATEMENT.

No platform exists that is truly holistic and focuses on providing a self-guided therapeutic environment in a patient-centric platform. Interactions from the platform help move a person, their family and caregivers to have more control over their journey, data and outcomes. We want to promote and encourage self-care management using our patient-education model as an evidence-based framework to structure and organize the experience.


Additionally, most platforms are developed around the English language and western culture, which does not reflect the diversity of communities and societies served. They can unknowingly perpetuate healthcare disparities and inequities of care. This ultimately affects the health and wellbeing of people living in those communities and societies.

A successful solution would be to design a platform that addressed disparities and equity of care and provide a multilingual, multicultural experience that assures people access to information, support and care with greater efficiency, in an inclusive, holistic manner. This is particularly beneficial as it’s estimated that 80% of health outcomes are influenced by what happens in the community and at home, not in the hospital or clinic setting.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY.

Our client is comprised of a global interprofessional team, representing almost every discipline found in healthcare. It is globally connected in Australia and Europe. In April 2017, client was selected for the Microsoft BizSpark Startup program to develop and build the platform. September 2017, client began collaborating with Swiss wearable manufacturer Biovotion AG to integrate Environ device as a primary wearable device for their Total Health Platform.

Client’s competitive advantage will be sustained by expanding upon the existing Total Health core platform in two key ways. It is one of the most affordable and comprehensive connected e-health solutions in the market. It also provides a competitive advantage upon which to build new business and extend the platform to remote monitoring for pain, mental health/behavior, obesity, diabetes, heart failure, asthma and hypertension programs that currently require an office visit. Remote senior safety care with notifications is included with remote monitoring. The Health platform will add new features in subsequent phases. The consumer version will use gaming, biofeedback, body recognition technology and mixed reality to extends therapeutic experiences – including medical video remote interpreting.

OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT.

Healthcare budgets are being cut in many countries and the out-of-pocket contribution of people to health expenses is growing fueling concerns about sustainability of universal healthcare systems. Globally, far fewer dollars are allocated to prevention as compared to treatment and direct care. There is a huge opportunity to prevent chronic diseases and avoid costs associated with them. Costs are avoided by preventing conditions and diseases that are “preventable”. This must start early in life and the emphasis to continue part of the life long relationship we want out platform to provide.

There is a critical need to develop innovative care delivery models that reduce the overall cost of healthcare globally while contributing to improving outcomes of care. Our platform extends care delivery into the community and home. Costs are avoided when people know when and where to go for care e.g. using the right resource at the right time (self-care, clinic, ED, Hospital).

Health improves when people are more involved and engaged in their care. Outcomes of care are better when users are involved in choosing meaningful goals and the plan to meet them. Technology is an important way to reach billions of people around the world. It can connect communities and the health systems supporting them.
